14th January 2007: thirty six Scouts from six different troops in Ashdown District took part in the first of this year's Overland Training sessions - learning how to read maps and use compasses - on a brilliantly sunny winters' day on Ashdown Forest. In a marked contrast to recent years, only a handful of these Scouts were experienced 'Overlanders'. Most were having a go at this for the first time and there is therefore plenty of scope for other first timers from the same and other troops to join in during the coming weeks.

If you are new to all of this, and/or if the rest of your Troop aren't involved, just click here for further information, then tell your Troop leader that you'd like to have a go. You don't need to be in a team at this stage, so it is OK for just one or two individual Scouts from a troop take part in the training.

Those who turned up this week benefited from being taught in small groups how to squeeze the maximum possible information out of their maps and compasses, so as to improve their chances of knowing where they are. Most of them also learnt the benefits of being able to follow footpaths accurately on their maps, rather than simply following a compass bearing in a straight line across rough terrain (almost always a slower and wetter option, especially on Ashdown Forest!).

Next week hike starts and finishes at Ditchling Beacon on the South Downs. You need to be there by 9 am after meeting up first at your own HQ's at 8:am. Detailed information regarding the route will be sent by email to all leaders, and you should contact them, in the first instance if you have any queries. The leader in overall charge of that session will be Martyn Everitt.

Troop Leaders, please note that it is ESSENTIAL, from next week onwards that all those turning up are properly equipped. This means each of your Scouts having everything listed on page 6 of the Overland Booklet (except sleeping bags), together with the team equipment provided by you (as listed here).

IN THE INTERESTS OF THEIR OWN SAFETY, ANY SCOUTS TURNING UP WITHOUT ALL OF THE NECESSARY CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT WILL BE SENT HOME BEFORE THE HIKE BEGINS
