Lets see some more home-made (or decorated) carts.

They may not win races, but they are great fun anyway. And one will win the constructors trophy.

£5 per team booking

NOTE: there will be BBQ, Drinks and Sweets available again this year.

Merlin has issued the following additional information regarding rules etc (some of which are sensible!):

o Any push-cart will do. Of course it is in the sprit of the thing for the Scouts to make and/or decorate as much of the cart as possible.

o Each race is for 2 or 3 teams.

o Each team consists of 4 scouts, who assemble in the 'pits' at the start of the race.

o One of the team will push the cart once round the course, while another steers. Two of the team wait in the pits.

o On completion of a lap, the team will swap places to another pusher and driver.

o At the end of 4 laps all 4 team members must have pushed one lap and steered one lap.

o The race finishes after 4 laps, except in the final, when 8 laps must be completed.

o Regular breathing must be performed by racers and observers before, during and after the race.

o Cycle helmets must be worn by all drivers (including leaders when it comes to the leaders race at the end)

o Smoking is not permitted while driving. Or while pushing. Or by any scout.

o Carts must not break during the race.

o They may expire afterwards if they so wish.

o Photographs of the race are permitted only if they include Merlin.

Rules and Information

Welcome (back) to this years Soap Box Derby, hosted by 1st Wadhurst Scouts at Uplands School.  With about 14 teams competing, we will run 3 races for every team, then 8 teams in the quarter finals, 4 team semi and 2 team final.  There will be medals for 1st 2nd and 3rd places, and a constructors trophy (yet to be made!).

I want this to remain a fun event right to the end. To ensure this PLEASE note the following simple rules:

  1. The race marshal’s instructions & decisions must be followed.
  2. Use of sensible clothing and cycle hats and gloves must be worn to reduce risk of injury.  Races will not start unless teams have both hats and gloves being worn.
  3. Teams to be ready to race when called.
  4. Aggressive behaviour during the race is NOT accepted and may result in disqualification.
  5. Aggressive behaviour away from the race is not acceptable either.
  6. Teams must register at the race reception to get their team labels and provide payment (£5 per team).
  7. All carts are to remain in the Centre of the race course, when not in use.
  8. Only race marshals, the current race teams or repair engineers are allowed in the Centre of the race course.
  9. A cart that is clearly dangerous (i.e. nails sticking out) must be made safe before racing.
  10. These rules must apply to the adults race too!

There will be squash, bbq and sweets available.  Loos and water can be found in the scout hut or the Sports Hall. For other things, try the facilities in Wadhurst high street or the Sports Hall (other side of the school).

Please don’t drop litter – take it home or use the school bins.

If it rains we get wet! But hopefully we will be able to use a very large marquee too.

If teams wish to dress in a style that matches their cart, then that would be rather fun too.

The constructors trophy will be awarded to the team who’s cart is a decent mix of design and scout effort.  It is typical that many carts fall into this bracket – so I hope that the scouts enjoyed the making and competing regardless of the outcome.  And above else..

HAVE FUN!
